Make your very own effigy pottery!
Cherokee pottery has been made for different purposes since time immemorial. We made vessels to carry water, for storage, to cook with, and in burial practices, but one of the most interesting of all of these are the effigy pottery. Our Pre-Columbian effigy bowls and bottles were formed to depict different animals, birds, fish, and even humans. In this class, we will choose a single effigy to focus on, and will create it in clay. These are not just figurines; they are also vessels.
Students will work with Cherokee National Treasures Victoria Vazquez and Jane Osti who both specialize in clay effigies and will guide the class with fellow Cherokee potter Carrie Lind assisting. All materials provided.
Classes fill up quickly and will be capped at 9 people, so be sure to reserve your spot today!
No reservations will be taken after 4:00 PM (CDT) the day before the class.
Cancellations must be given no later than 24 hours before the class.
Class to be held at the Cherokee Nation Anna Mitchell Cultural and Welcome Center at 953 E. Illinois in Vinita, OK from 10AM - 3PM.
You are encouraged to bring your own snacks/lunch.
Participant age restricted to 18+.
